In 1999, 3800 fires were attributed to smoking. Of these fires, 120 lives were lost, 260 people were injured, and damages were estimated to be nearly $60 million.
- Never smoke in bed.
- Smoking should not be allowed in a home where oxygen is in use
- Keep matches and lighters up high, out of children’s sight and reach (preferably in a locked cabinet)
- Use large, deep ashtrays, and empty them often
- Never dump an astray into the garbage without first wetting the butts and ashes
